Hi today I will be speaking to you about: Te reo Maori should be compulsory in NZ schools.
In the olden days maori children were not allowed to speak maori in schools otherwise they got either a whip or a cane. So we should keep this maori language alive in schools. We are lucky that when we talk maori we don’t get a cane or a whip and in the olden days the maori kids got split up from the pakeha kids and The teachers taught the maori kids english they were not allowed to talk maori at all.
I think that it is great to be able to have Te Reo Maori in NZ schools. All of those kids in schools that don’t know what te reo maori means or they don’t no how to speak it well they could learn it at school.
I also believe that we should speak te reo maori because that is the language for our country . If we don’t have te reo maori then we will not be able to say our mihi.
I think that we should have te reo everywhere in shops like mcdonald's dairy’s supermarkets and heaps of other shops So who is on the same boat as me let’s keep this maori language alive.
I think that te reo maori is important because it is part of our NZ culture and our heritage. Te reo is a girt a taonga passed down from our ancestors we must uphold the mana of te reo, by speaking it every day so it empowers us to keep learning our language to teach the future generations. We should encourage our future generation to speak so that when it is time for our tupuna to pass our language is still kept alive if no one speaks or is taught our language i’m afraid our language maybe lost.
My name is Amira Wihongi and that was my speech about Te reo maori should be compulsory in NZ Schools.
